Portugal Recognizes MPLA Governing Angola

Portugal on Sunday recognized the Soviet and Cuban backed MPLA as Angola's official government after an all night cabinet meeting. Foreign Minister Ernesto Melo Antunes called for non interference and mutual respect. Portugal granted independence last November 4 and shared governing powers with MPLA and two non Communist groups. UNITA factions vowed continued resistance as Cuban troops and Soviet arms supported MPLA forces. Refugees and regional reactions added to the developing crisis.

Luxury driver kills four in plaza crash on Fifth Avenue

A tuxedo-clad driver lost control of a 1976 Cadillac Saville at 2:30 a.m. along South Street near the Plaza Hotel, fatally striking James Hutsler 54 of Boston and two others, injuring three, and destroying a horse drawn cab. Driver Phillip Cohen 73 was hospitalized with leg injuries. no charges filed. The other victims were James Rochelle 3 and an unnamed man, with a fourth victim withheld.
