The shift follows Congress last October when the country entered 10 straight months of daylight saving as an energy measure.

An AP investigation links a CIA agent to efforts by former Attorney General John N. Mitchell to aid financier Robert L. Vesco's release from a Geneva jail on bail. The agent spoke with Swiss intelligence on December 1, 1971, amid claims of high US government interest. Vesco was later released on $125,000 bail, then fled to Costa Rica. charges were eventually dropped. The CIA confirmed the agent’s position but denied agency involvement, calling it a routine cover mission. The memo’s author remained unnamed. The Vesco case had surfaced during Mitchell and Maurice H. Stans's 1970s trial over a secret Nixon campaign contribution.
Severe storm system roared through southwest Oklahoma causing widespread damage. The Duncan and Altus regions faced massive power outages and heavy property destruction with over 60 injuries and about 100 people left homeless. Tornadoes accompanied hail and snow overnight, with Altus hit first by a predawn twister followed by heavy hail and snow buildup.
A VASP plane en route to Brasilia was hijacked after a stop in Goiania on a 100 mile flight from Sao Paulo. Police surrounded the aircraft as it landed and the airport was closed. An Italian embassy intermediary sought by officials was not aboard. The hijacker claimed to be not alone but gave no group affiliation.
