Degrees Earned At W M College In 18th Century
Unpublished memoirs recount the arduous, multi stage process for a William and Mary degree in the 1700s. A student faced exams by all professors, a convocation with the president, a thesis reviewed by the president, and an oration recital, before final approval and memory delivery of the thesis. Enrollment then was about 60 students with five or six professors as the institution began adopting new methods. The piece contrasts historic rigor with modern ease.
