Legislation To Allow Consolidation Vote In N C Assembly
North Carolina lawmakers introduced a consolidation vote bill allowing counties and their largest cities to unify governing bodies. The Local Government Study Commission backed 14 reform bills to streamline local governance and expand home rule, with Rep. Herschel Harkins and Sen. Livingstone Stallings leading the measures. Navy at Norfolk Holds POW Offer Programs in Abeyance
Atlantic Fleet spokesman Cmdr. Clark Gammell said Norfolk is not yet coordinating broad offers of help for returning POWs, unlike San Diego where chambers and the Navy League provide meals, hotel rooms, taxi scripts, and activities. Local groups, including the Norfolk Chamber of Commerce led by Guy Bordelon, have offered services and await where needed. Medical evaluations from Clark Air Base may route some POWs to Tidewater facilities, increasing demand for lodging and support services.
