Mechanical peach pickers seen in future

Dr. H W Hoover of North Carolina State University told the National Peach Council in Charlotte that mechanical harvesters may soon overcome labor shortages hindering growth. He described freezing then dehydrating peach pulp to a spongy material that rehydrates with flavor. Peach juice and concentrate are entering markets as expansions in new peach products. The convention highlighted exhibits from sprayers to giant orchard equipment as about 500 visitors gathered at Queen Charlotte Hotel for the councils silver anniversary. A panel of plant pathologists will discuss the mystery death of thousands of North Carolina peach trees last spring.
