Longest Suspension Span Would Link Italy, Sicily
The Italian government plans a record setting suspension bridge across the Strait of Messina linking Italy and Sicily. The 9,000 foot span would carry rail and a six lane highway, rising about 230 feet above the water, with construction expected to take five to eight years and four towers towering over 1,250 feet. The project follows a long history of proposals since 1860, including various tunnel and tube concepts, and would connect rail and road traffic now ferried across the strait.
