Stone seeks exemption for Patrick Henry College in UVa plan
Senator William F. Stone will amend Gov. Godwins community college bill to exempt Martinsville Patrick Henry College from provisions. He questions excluding Danville and other colleges, arguing Patrick Henry stays linked to a prestige UVa system. The measure envisions a state network of two-year and technical colleges under a new board, with Danville and UVa branches debated for merger or upgrade.

First Local Security Check Paid Chatham Woman At Age 85
Miss Mary Tinder of 452 Henry Street, born in Chatham eighty five years ago, received her first social security check this week under 1965 amendments. The change lowers eligibility to three quarters of coverage, enabling some workers to qualify with fewer quarters. Tinder worked about 30 years at Dan River Mills until 1937, earned three quarters there, and has lived in Danville since infancy. The presentation was made by Danville Social Security representative Mrs. Roxy C. Diggs. The official urged older workers to recheck eligibility under new rules and noted others over 72 who previously did not qualify may now be eligible.
