Virginia Tops Nation In Acreage Seeded On Private Land

State Forester G W Dean announced Virginia ranked third nationwide in acres planted to forest trees on private property in 1965 and third in forest tree seedling production. The state’s two Division of Forestry nurseries produced over 42 million trees, with seed orchards and production areas totaling 200 and 1 125 acres respectively. Seed orchards graft superior stock to produce seed for nurseries, and seed production areas yield seed from the finest trees yet are not as perfect as orchard stock. The program, begun in 1958, focuses on loblolly shortleaf white pine and yellow poplar, with only 42 loblolly pines qualifying for the orchard.
