Indians Reject Williamsburg Education Proposal
A Virginia colonial meeting recounts an Indian chief’s counter proposal to educate Virginia youths at their own schools. The chiefs argued differing cultures require different schooling concepts and noted northern colleges left their youths ill suited for woods life, warfare, or survival. The Indians offered to educate a dozen Virginian sons if Virginians sent theirs first. The William and Mary school continued educating natives into the 1700s, but Virginians never replied.
