Hart of Michigan Dies. Conscience of the Senate

Senator Philip A. Hart of Michigan, a liberal pillar known as the conscience of the Senate, died at 64 after battling malignant melanoma. A longtime reformer, he pushed antitrust action and consumer protections and had announced he would not seek a fourth term. Leading figures from Ford to Carter praised his integrity and public service. He will be buried on Mackinac Island after a memorial Mass at St. Matthew’s Cathedral.
