A pre dawn fire at an apartment complex in Woodbridge Virginia killed one person and injured six others. Residents fled into a snowstorm leaving many homeless as fire crews battled the blaze at the Riv apartments.
President Johnson arrived at Lackland and Brooke Army hospitals to greet wounded Marines returning from the war. A Marine private Hudson was wounded by a hand grenade. Families cheered as patients left planes, and Johnson urged gratitude to the fallen and inform the public they are home for Christmas. Fire at a Huntington apartment left residents homeless. volunteers organized shelter.
Viet Nam news describes unaccounted four engine CL44 crew feared dead and a Mass for 5,000 GIs at Cam Ranh Bay led by Francis Cardinal Spellman. Reports detail a mortar and small arms attack near Da Nang, with Marines suffering light casualties, and an extended cease fire under review. Additional skirmishes include a Tuy Hoa patrol engagement, helicopter hits near Phan Thiet, and a Da Nang Marine unit exchange with two guerrilla bodies recovered.
Pope Paul arrived in Florence after a three hour drive and spoke from the cathedral steps promising solidarity with victims. He joined a midnight Mass in Santa Maria del Fiore with about 20 000 mourners and thanked flood relief donors from around the world. The pope praised youth efforts and aid from Red Cross UNESCO and many nations as Florence mourned and rebuilt.
The National Safety Council reports 180 deaths in the three day Christmas weekend, with the tally racing ahead of last year’s. A severe snow belt and limited daylight heightened danger as families traveled for the holiday. Estimates foresee 650 to 750 deaths nationwide during the Christmas period. The prior peak for a holiday was Thanksgiving at 748. Other three day holidays ranged from 542 to 636 deaths.
