Channel Reconstruction Could Save Virginia Millions
An engineering study for Richmond area taxpayers finds reconstructing the Rappahannock River channel could save about 124 million dollars versus building the proposed 131 million dollar Salem Church Dam. The plan aims to reduce flood damage by deepening the river bed near Fredericksburg and Falmouth by five feet, with opposition from conservationists and some legislators. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers supports the dam, while Harza Engineering assessed the channel option as more economical.
