Officials outline acute idiopathic polyradiculoneuritis known as Guillain Barré as a rare nonfatal condition causing symmetric limb weakness and sensory loss. Spokesman notes cases may rise post vaccination and estimates about 4000 U.S. cases yearly, with no clear current increase.
The Virginia Supreme Court heard extensive arguments on whether public employee collective bargaining is legal. If it reverses the Arlington Circuit Court ruling, state efforts to ban bargaining statewide may advance. The session featured Gov. Mills Godwin and Atty. Gen. Andrew Miller arguing that localities lack authority to bargain and that such agreements conflict with state policy.
Washington AP reports state tax officials urged a federal advisory panel Thursday to back a proposed federal law against cigarette smuggling. Officials from New York, New Jersey, Minnesota and Massachusetts claim smuggling fuels organized crime and drains state revenues as taxes rise. they push for a uniform nationwide tax rate and federal action now.

In Miami Beach, Sarah Kirsch, 70, moved to escape New York crime. Robbers burst in, killed Kirsch with a cloth gag after she offered three cents. Adelaide Lewis, 81, survived with Esther Josephson, 77, recalling a 70 minute terror. Neighbors later heard cries. survivors did not require hospitalization. The robbers fled with jewelry, cash, medicines, and a safe box.
A Crozet woman sues Virginia Electric & Power Co alleging its security deposit policy violates due process and equal protection. The suit targets Vepco and the state Corporation Commission for approving the practice. The plaintiff cites hardship cases including a prior $250 deposit dispute.
