Viet Cong Battle Toll and Vietnamese Victory Noted
Allied forces reported heavy fighting in the delta with a combined U S Vietnamese riverine task force trapping a Viet Cong unit of about 300 along a canal 66 miles southwest of Saigon last Monday and killing 235. In Da Nang area, U S troops killed 99. The clash paused at midday Friday then resumed, while a monsoon break signaled more combat. The U S command hailed the delta success as a smashing victory with limited American ground involvement beyond advisers and air support. Two Men Rescued After 12 Days Adrift In Small Boat
Scott Fitzgerald and John Terrano, ages 32 and 60, were rescued 12 days after they left on a fishing trip off Morehead City North Carolina. They drifted 80 miles east of shore aboard an 18 foot fiberglass boat subsisting on canned cat food sardines and one fish. They were picked up by the Russian merchant ship Kholmski and treated by a Russian woman doctor. They described rough seas 20 to 40 miles per hour winds, and said they saw nine ships and several planes during their ordeal. Both men were reported in surprisingly good condition and hospitalized briefly before reuniting with their wives.

Singer Jimmie Rodgers In Critical Condition After Surgery
Glendale AP report says singer Jimmie Rodgers remained in extremely critical condition after a second cranial operation for a skull fracture from a beating he does not recall. Doctors said swelling of the brain required removal and freezing of part of the skull, with a three to six month replacement outlook. Rodgers, 33, was found Dec. 1 on a freeway off ramp. police had no arrests.
