New Era In Astronomy Dawns With Satellite Launch
CAPE KENNEDY Fla AP a new era in astronomy could dawn Saturday when NASA plans to orbit an 80 million satellite to study thousands of stars and the universe’s origin. OAO 2 will be launched atop an Atlas Centaur booster after prior grounding due to guidance problems. It carries two main experiments a Smithsonian four telescope system and a Wisconsin seven telescope payload to study ultraviolet light from stars to map evolution and chemical composition. If successful six months could yield data on more than 1,000 stars and produce star maps catalogs and photographs for further study. The first OAO launched in 1966 failed after two days in orbit.
