Peace Talks Set Today At Capital
Washington AP The NCAA and AAU announced peace talks scheduled for Tuesday in Washington under pressure from the Senate Commerce Committee. NCAA executive secretary Walter Byers said NCAA president Everett Barnes and AAU president Clifford Buck will lead their delegations to discuss settlement points from two weeks of Commerce hearings. Barnes said agreement on as many points as possible would be pursued and arbitration could be used on unresolved issues. Also named were NCAA official William Reed and Philip Brown as advisers. Sen. Howard Cannon welcomed the development, noting Buck’s telegram confirming the talks. The parties’ executive directors Byers and Don Hull will not attend. The talks, described as the first face to face peace talks in over two years, follow four meetings last winter without substantial progress.
