Senate delays action on Marshall nomination again

Washington Apr reports that the Senate Judiciary Committee again postponed discharge of Thurgood Marshall's nomination to the 2nd U S Circuit Court of Appeals. Senator Johnston delayed action for one week citing absences and need to study the subcommittee record. Marshall, once NAACP counsel, was Kennedy's nominee first named Sept 23 and has served on the court pending Senate action.

Loot Recovered In Raleigh Bank Robbery Case

Detective teams pursued William Johnson Jr. after he fled, found a distanced bag with about 392 dollars cash and checks, and Johnson was charged with robbery with firearms following the incident at First Citizens Bank. M C Commission Sets Interstate Schedule Study

Raleigh AP The North Carolina Highway Commission moved to form a five member study group to review the interstate highway construction priority. Chairman Merrill Evans said the commission must consider not delaying the 185 link between Durham and Henderson while weighing hearings and possible changes within 60 days. Reports indicate several major wildfires burning near Fresno and beyond. Anberry fire 1340 acres 20 miles northeast of Fresno was controlled Wednesday night. Quake Shakes City and Logan. damage widespread

A major earthquake rattled Logan and nearby towns including Richmond and Lewiston Utah for about 30 seconds. Richmond, a 1000 resident town, saw homes badly damaged and several evacuated as nearly every chimney was toppled.

Kennedy selection call hints at new undersecretary

Wirtz said Kennedy phoned Wirtz about 15 minutes before the announcement to relay his selection. Salinger predicts a new undersecretary to replace Wirtz will be named soon. Custody Dispute Over Rosemary Roamed Courtrooms

In a Juvenile Court hearing Judge Taylor ruled Judge Young had authority to issue Rosemary Sheppard's custody order despite defense claims of lack of jurisdiction. Assistant County Attorney Flanagan argued the petition fits Juvenile Court, alleging inadequate care and punishment for minor infractions, while delay until Sept. 26 was deemed not unfair. Rosemary, present with Mrs. McNeese, passed her mother in the hall without speaking.

Three Persons Wounded In Durham Gun Battle

In Durham North Carolina a two hour gun battle left three people wounded. Police say 18 year old Donald Wayne Hockaday fired at officers and residents from a two story house as authorities tried to force surrender. Patrolman Mark Hicks and others were hit by shotgun pellets and wounds. Hockaday, an escapee from a Durham County raid gang, was captured after the fight and faces new charges including escape and assault with a deadly weapon. He had been imprisoned for assault and battery to kill and escaped twice since June.
