Hovercraft Transit Links Alesund To Coastal Communities
The world s first commercial hovercraft service connects Alesund with nearby towns by skimming fjords. Westland SRN5 and SRN6 craft carry up to 38 passengers or three tons of freight at speeds near 61 knots, reduced to 50 knots in five foot waves. A local ferry firm runs the service with Standard Oil Company of New Jersey backing, offering free kerosene as the system proves its value.
