Carter signals Palestinian openness to UN 242 backing in talks

Critical Canal Talks Open In Panama City

US and Panamanian negotiators opened what may be the final round of talks on a treaty to gradually transfer the Panama Canal to Panama. Officials projected a statement of conceptual agreements could be initialled soon, outlining main principles after years of talks. The current treaty, signed in 1903, gives the United States control. the plan envisions U.S. troop pullout and canal handover by 2000 with ongoing U.S. intervention rights if the canal is threatened.

Nyerere Visits Tennessee Dams and Grand Ole Opry

Tanzanian President Julius Nyerere arrived in Tullahoma on a one day visit. He inspected Normandy Dam operated by TVA and flew to Arnold Engineering Development Center home of the world’s largest wind tunnel. He toured the Grand Ole Opry and spoke with TVA board member Bill Jenkins. State officials say he asked to see the dam due to interest in TVA impacts on rural areas.

Airlines lead in CAB complaint rates in June

Texas International Airlines reported the fewest consumer complaints per 100000 passengers among major carriers in June with 0.79. Ozark and Aloha followed at 0.89 and 0.91 respectively as the CAB highlighted areas covered by its consumer protections office.

Pepco urged to complete high voltage ring around DC

A private Ernst & Ernst study for the District of Columbia Public Service Commission says Pepco should quickly build a high voltage transmission ring to reduce blackout risk. It notes that without the Circle, a single line failure between Bowie and Oak Grove could blackout southern Maryland, Prince George's County south of Central Avenue, and part of the District during peak demand.
