Grand Jury Resumes Probe Into Wallace Campaign Funds

A federal grand jury in Montgomery resumes its secret probe of George C. Wallace campaign finances. Nine witnesses testified Thursday with at least nine more expected Friday. Subpoenas targeted Wallace aides Bill Jones and Cecil Jackson, while others like Asa Carter and Dave Silverman also appeared. The inquiry probes possible income tax and Corrupt Practices Act violations in Wallace era campaigns and state dealings with contractors.

Viet Cong cease-fire offer discussed by Mrs. Binh

Mrs. Nguyen Thi Binh formally placed on record a Viet Cong order calling on American troops to desert and cease-fire if Americans withdraw. Thao avoided specifics, noting cease-fire depends on American withdrawal, while Binh’s statement dropped the clause opposing the war.

Proposal To Boost Viet Air Force Being Studied

Washington AP reports Pentagon officials study a plan to add about 5,000 maintenance technicians to the South Vietnamese air force to increase flying hours for helicopters rather than add aircraft. Total force about 50,000 with 1,200 to 1,300 planes. helicopters ~500. U.S. officials warn against withdrawal without adequate airpower. Thuy says no talks on troop withdrawal before a date is set. The U.S. notes aging maintenance, and while Saigon seeks heavier attack jets, no F4s are planned.

Trial Continues as Ko Toue Cleared on Neck Cut Charge

Midway through the trial the defense won a directed verdict of innocent on a charge that Ko toue assaulted the same prisoner by cutting him on the neck. The judge ruled the government failed to prove the charge. Kotoue is the fourth soldier tried in the My Lai incident and third to be acquitted. Acquitted earlier were Sgt. David Mitchell and Sgt. Charles Hutto. The captain’s acquittal follows Lt. William Calley Jr.’s murder conviction. Col. Oran Henderson faces trial at Ft. Meade on dereliction of duty charges. The trial progresses despite setback.

Two Goldsboro Men Are Killed

Two Goldsboro residents Cedric Edgeerton age 75 and William Nufer 73 were killed when a car swerved to avoid another car and struck a railroad warning sign at U S 70 intersection. J Rodney Combs 59 and two passengers were injured. Nancy Price 19 faced charges for failure to yield.

Cambodian Crisis Deepens as Lon Nol Quits Cabinet Bid

Phnom Penh AP report says Marshal Lon Nol abandoned efforts to form a new government and named Lt. Gen. Sisowath Sirik Matak to try. Matak, elder statesman and Lon Nol ally, faces army and National Assembly opposition if he pursues a cabinet plan. Lon Nol resigned as premier April 20 after a February stroke.
