Home Medical Care Brings Hospital Help Home

Nancy Tobin in Rochester faces six months in a full body cast for scoliosis but is released to Home Care. A doctor, nurse, and visiting aide coordinate hospital beds, medical supplies, and family support at home. Home Care slashes hospital bills in Rochester program

Rochester's Home Care program has saved patients over a million in hospital costs since its start five years ago. In a typical leg amputation case, 55 days of Home Care cost 639.60 versus 3,125 in a hospital, with nurses, aides, transport, and supplies covered through subsidized or reduced rates. The program, led by Dorothy Watts White, plans more direct admissions and at least partial hospital avoidance as costs rise toward 85 a day by 1970.
