Louise COO announces a nationwide meat boycott beginning Sunday despite new price ceilings on beef, lamb, and pork. The action involves multiple groups coordinating a Saturday event to promote the protest.
The Nixon administration expects the meat price ceiling to be dropped by late summer or early fall and not extended to other foods. Agriculture Secretary Butz cited consumer protests as temporarily lowering meat prices but doubted long term effects. Farmers and consumer groups voiced mixed reactions amid talks of further price relief.
In Saigon thousands of U.S. civilians remain in Vietnam using military skills, their work cloaked by secrecy. About 6,000 to 7,000 civilians, many ex-service, support South Vietnam’s army through contractors and the Defense Attache Office. The office oversees contractors, handles equipment transfer, and plans one for one materiel replacement under the ceasefire, while avoiding battlefield field visits.
The final group of U S prisoners freed from Hanoi prisons headed home as Army Captain Robert T. White of Newport News Va prepared to depart Clark Air Base Philippines aboard a C9 Nightingale medical plane for Saigon. White expected to be released in the Mekong Delta by the Viet Cong with a crowd of well wishers cheering departing POWs. Airlifted avec 16 men on the first C141, other flights carried 17, 20 and 16 men to bases in Maryland Texas California and California. Included in the returning group is Lloyd Oppel a Canadian missionary freed by Pathet Lao. Captain Keith Lewis of Goldsboro NC limped off the plane but joined the crowd to thank well wishers.
Senate investigators heard witnesses say ITT lobbied the CIA for a covert Chilean operation to influence the 1970 vote. CIA policy reportedly favored non intervention, though John McCone testified he sought a minimal effort within budget. Harold Geneen and Richard Helms linked ITT’s Chilean issues to CIA action.
North Vietnam and the Viet Cong charged the United States and Saigon with a wide range of peace violations threatening the cease-fire. Thieu said he would seek billions in aid in the U S and during trips to Italy Britain South Korea and Taiwan. The Saigon military warned of retaliatory action over the Tong Le Chan ranger siege as casualties rose.
President Nixon plans two days of talks with South Vietnamese leader Nguyen Van Thieu in California and is ready to assure moral and economic backing. The main issue is whether the U S will guarantee military intervention to prevent major cease fire violations by North Vietnam and deter an invasion. Thieu returns from Saigon seeking a consolidated peace and thanks the United States for its decade of involvement. A Thieu aide in the U S says a guarantee against a break by North Vietnam is desired. Nixon’s resolve is seen as vital for peace to endure.
A late Saturday series of tornadoes swept central Georgia near Atlanta, killing one person and injuring scores. Monroe man Neal Broach died as his home was leveled. Stockbridge and Conyers suffered heavy damage with power outages. Nursing home debris wounded about 10 to 15 elderly. Conyers and Athens hospitals treated many weather injuries. Gov. Carter visited Conyers to assess damage and planned a helicopter tour. DeKalb General reported several critical patients and about 20 total arrivals from the storm.
In New Canaan Cann AP contest named Nixonburger Burn off the town Democratic committee sponsored the meal substitution event to show how to cut grocery costs. A dandelion and egg omelet and deep fried pecans with mushroom sauce tied for first place and the winning dishes were sent to the White House.
The Western White House repeated President Nixon's support for L. Patrick Gray as FBI director and denied reports that Henry E. Peterson was offered the post. Deputy White House press secretary Warren called the Peterson claim false, and the Justice Department rejected the story as junk.
East Coast Oil Co. a major independent gasoline firm in Richmond, reducing hours at its retail stations due to supply allocations. Execut ive vice president Thomas M. Allen says stations are closing earlier as suppliers limit shipments, with one supplier cutting three days of product. Pointer's Oil Co. owner John C. Zehler calls the situation crippling, noting allotments slashed from 600,000–700,000 to about 348,000 gallons monthly.
