Mob hangs tavern keeper and guest in Helena incident

News from Helena reports that a tavern keeper named Covers and a guest named Smith were hanged by a mob of 15 at the mouth of the Green Horn for firing a neighbor’s barn and destroying substantial stock.

In Battle Creek Michigan a man named Johnson confronted his hired man over alleged improper dealings with his wife. He bound and gagged the man in a dense wood and pinned him to a tree. The victim was found two days later by a search party, unconscious and badly frozen but may recover. Johnson and his wife fled.

Tragic Dakota Frontier Murder of Wiseman Family

In August 1863 near Yankton the Wiseman children were killed by Indians during a raid. Mrs. Wiseman fled to Yankton, soldiers found the house looted and remaining children wounded, one infant died in the oven, two girls perished later, and the attackers disappeared toward Sioux Falls.
