Snowbound eastbound train derailed near Volga

A Chicago to eastern mail train was derailed near Volga, South Dakota, by packed snow but no injuries occurred. The eastbound service was delayed, with the next mail from the east uncertain and likely arriving later tonight.

In the Cavour case James Collins vs M A Conley a verdict of 50 dollars plus costs was returned for the plaintiff after a full trial.

Newhall House Fire Exposes Hidden Building Dangers

The Milwaukee Newhall house collapse Tuesday morning is blamed on careless maintenance and a failing safety system. Insurance men warned the structure as a death trap, yet guests were still received until the catastrophe revealed serious safety concerns. Union church meeting enhances devotion in Huron

The Baptist church hosted a well attended service last Thursday with songs, testimony and prayer led by Rev. Seymour. A sermon proved effective and the crowd heard plans for Friday night prayers for nations and a Union Sunday School Prayer gathering next Sunday at 6 o clock. Pioneer Store sells piat books.

Gans Bros. Victims of Fraud Expose Insolvency Claim

Developments Thursday cast doubt on Gans Bros insolvency, showing they were defrauded. They leased livery stock to John Fosnaugh last fall under a profitable deal from Oct 1382 to Feb 11 1883. Fosnaugh later mortgaged the stock to Harry Glenn, prompting eviction attempts that failed when the sheriff found no valid claim beyond a potential replevia writ.

The January 9 1883 meeting notes the board with E C Walton as chairman approving justice of the peace reports for periods ending June 30 and August 30 1882. Beadle County Board Minutes Focus on Ex-Treasurer Miller

Beadle County commissioners meet on January 10 and 11, 1883 to finalize settlement with ex-Treasurer Miller. They appoint Reed & Wolrath as county attorneys for the year and authorize warrants for fees and tax refunds, plus insanity and polling tax payments. Additional bills for jail work, hardware, coal, and medical care for Wm. B. Benjamin are approved.
