Berlin bans transport of American hog products by regulation gazette. London reports a slump in American wheat prices after weather woes, with June forward delivery purchases leading to five shilling declines and possible failures in London and provinces.
Denver reports Alfred S. Packer was found guilty of murdering five companions in San Juan county in 1872 and of eating their bodies. A motion for a new trial will be filed arguing the crime occurred outside the Indian reservation and thus the court lacked jurisdiction.
A small street bomb exploded in front of the post office in Boston yesterday but caused no damage. The incident sparked talk around the Marquis of Lorne's arrival as he walked to the hotel with his party, escorted by detectives after arriving at 8:30.
The Missouri telegraph line to Stephenson failed yesterday due to high water. A Helena dispatch says the gorge broke below Stephenson at 6 PM and water is falling there. The rise of about thirty feet is expected to reach Bismarck today, risking ice blockage and overflow of the river lowlands.
Milwaukee witness Linehan, chief engineer at the Newhall house during the fire, testified he was approached by Schaller lawyer McKenny and saloon keeper Roth to swear the blaze was caused by a gas jet in the elevator shaft. Debts of Schaller surpassed $4,000 and he had tried to borrow $500 from Dr. Crocker before the fire.
Coll Geo L Onoway has qualified as Territorial Auditor and will be in Pierre only part of the time due to business interests. When the capital moves to Huron he plans to spend several days weekly in his office. He appoints E C Johnson, a well known Yankton journalist, as deputy while the office remains well staffed.
To the People of Beadle County you are invited to a mass meeting at Baptist church in Huron on Tuesday April 17 at 2 PM to discuss plans to urge the Capital Commission of the Territory of Dakota to locate the Capital at Huron and to consider related questions.
The commission invites proposals for land donation to locate a capsite. Proposals must include land description, donation amount, a 20 percent cash check, a bond double the donation, and an abstract of title.
