Edwin Hart of Hayward reports a series of alleged attacks on his cat over three months. He says the animal was found wet and mud covered after an attempted drowning and that the cat’s right hind leg was broken months earlier. Police are reviewing the motive and suspect someone aims to harm the pet.
The Public Health Service reported a sharp drop in new polio cases last week, signaling the 1956 season has passed its peak. The week ended Sept 15 logged 765 cases, down from 968 the prior week and well below 1,604 in the same week last year, with 212 paralytic cases versus 241 the year before. Overall this year 11,503 polio cases have been reported, compared with 21,751 in 1955.
Two Southern Alameda County men died in high speed crashes early today. Darrell Caskey 24 of Newark died at Kaiser Oakland after his car hit a pole on Upper Broadway. Charles C. Cline 33 of San Leandro died at Fairmont hospital when his car plunged from the Eastshore Freeway, tearing through guard fences and a windshield. Cline had been speeding 80 to 90 mph, witnesses said, and was struck by a panel truck driven by Ellinger who was uninjured. The other driver, Ellinger 41 of San Lorenzo, lost control but escaped injury. Caskey’s services are set for Saturday in Hayward. Authorities noted no citations issued yet, pending investigation. The report also mentions Phillip Hunter recovering from injuries after a bicycle accident on School Street. The Air Force has lifted a grounding order on B52 bombers after inspection following a deadly incident.
A screaming mob of teens overran police and guards during Elvis Presley’s Tupelo homecoming appearance. The crowd of about 12 500 surged the bleachers, crawled over officers, and reached for Presley as he urged them to return to their seats, finishing the matinee performance.
Mrs Leona Tomlinson seeks $1000 monthly alimony and half of about $250000 in real and personal property from contractor Tomlinson. He denies adultery findings and asserts Iowa marriage recognition. Proceedings cover joint tenancy, corporate roles, and a restraining order dispute as testimony continues in Judge A T Shine's court.
In Newark a Southern Pacific freight train struck a semi truck trailer at Willow Street crossing. Police Chief James Chambers said no injuries occurred. The truck driven by Frank E. Thompson of Modesto could not stop 150 feet from the crossing as the train struck the trailer, carrying it about 50 feet.
The weatherman predicts slightly warmer temperatures for tomorrow with fair conditions tonight and tomorrow. Yesterday's high and today's low appear uncertain due to fragmented text.
Six Stanford University students, all under age, were charged today in San Francisco with illegally buying beer. The case follows raids by state agents at Rudy's Alpine Inn last Tuesday and a related break in at a grocer in Redwood City. Two robbers and three bartenders were also arrested as authorities recovered about $3,000, while the invaders escaped with efforts to force the grocer to open a safe.
In Paris British Prime Minister Anthony Eden and French Premier Guy Mollet wrapped a two day meeting with a communique asserting full Anglo French solidarity in all domains. Eden said in French that they had done good work and would be in agreement tomorrow. Foreign ministers and aides joined to present a united world view.
Babe Didrikson Zaharias, famed American athlete, died at 42 in Galveston Texas after a three year cancer fight. Funeral plans call for a Beaumont service at 3 pm with cremation in Houston and private family burial. Her husband George Zaharias and siblings were at her bedside.
Sears Roebuck buys 29 acres in West Hayward near Winton Freeway to open a multi million dollar Sears Kahn shopping center in March 1958. The project includes a major Sears store of 220000 square feet, with other retailers and parking for 7300 cars. The Hewick Iron Works plans a 20 to 25 acre plant nearby, a gridiron style facility with limited odors, intended for Hayward. The site sits off Southern Pacific tracks near San Mateo Bridge road, marking Hayward’s first large industrial plant in five years. Construction aims for early spring with site prep after rainy season.
The Middle East News Agency reports Egypt backs Jordan after a brutal Jordanian assault. Nasser cables King Hussein promising Egypt stands with Jordan and recalls sending military equipment. Israel pledges cease-fire but Meir blames Jordan forces for provocation and violence.
In San Francisco a wooden cross burned in flames outside the home of Herman Browne his wife and three children as a rock shattered the dining room window. The rock carried a Jungle Kids comic cover with Get out of Daly City. Police said the act may be the first cross burning in the city and a neighbor extinguished the blaze.
Marshal Tito and his wife depart Belgrade for Russia accompanied by Soviet party chief Khrushchev. Also traveling are Yugoslav Vice President Rankovic and Djuro Pucar president of Bosnia. Officials plan a few days rest at Beaconset airport as Soviet envoy Firiubin attends farewell.
President Eisenhower said he will expand his campaign activities at the urging of Republican associates but will not change his habit of short speaking appearances. He noted early plans for five or six major speeches remain, though pressure to extend the program has grown. He defended his leadership against Stevenson and addressed Peron era issues and the Suez situation. He also stated he has never been a member of the NAACP.
In San Francisco three men robbed a nightspot, entering Gorgon’s restaurant and bar at 1 40 am. They wore blue jeans and motorcycle suits, or shorts, shouted threats, and escaped with about $3000 from owners and twenty patrons. All suspects were described as male.
