SHREVEPORT La UP Air Force Capt. George H French was sentenced to life imprisonment for attempting to sell atomic defense secrets to Russia. The board, three generals and four senior officers, imposed the maximum penalty for the offense. French had prior 13 years of Air Force service including 35 combat missions in World War I.
Teamsters President Dave Beck refused an invitation to answer AFL-CIO charges of corruption before the AFL-CIO Executive Council in New York. He denied the findings as baseless, and said the ethical practices conclusion did not meet union standards. The Teamsters executive board approved a letter to George Meany calling the matter inappropriate for press coverage.

The increase reflects a 9.348 million dollar rise in out of state gas costs to El Paso Natural Gas Co. of Texas, likely adding about 30 cents monthly to the average bill. EL Paso price changes may be affected by Federal Power Commission action.
