Prof Joel H Hildebrand of the University of California urged a new standard of academic freedom at the American Chemical Society meeting in Atlantic City He pressed the American Association of University Professors to abandon the idea that association with a Communist party implies subversive intent He argued freedom must exclude the destruction of freedom and that teachers must distinguish honest independents from Communists through judgments of scholarship character and devotion to ideals He warned outsiders may fail to see this distinction and that independent critics could be silenced
