Newark Days Carnival Opens With Free Jazz Night
Jeanette Skeeters and Brad Skeeters head to the Newark Days carnival rides operated by Foley and Burke as festivities run at the Community Center area on Newark Boulevard and Center Street. Tonight at 7 p.m. the High Jazz Band performs free, with a helicopter token drop, health care and art shows and a circus planned for tomorrow before the event ends Sunday.

Area patients help with cancer study
Area women with breast, ovary, or uterine cancer are being studied across 60 California hospitals to uncover why some develop cancer and others do not. Led by Dr. Ralph S. Paffenbarger Jr. from UC Berkeley, the NIH-funded project interviews about 4,000 cancer patients and 8,000 controls to identify risk factors and potential links to birth control pills and postmenopausal estrogen use.
