Airmail service to be boosted by 10-cent stamps
The Postal Service announces first class mail will deliver near airmail speed, with 3 percent next day or day-after delivery by Oct 1. A 1 cent stamp will buy what 13 cents previously did, and 13 ounce or lighter letters fall under new rates. Air mail stamps and cards can be exchanged for ordinary stamps starting next Monday, while airmail marked stationery remains at first class rates. Postmaster Bailor warns of higher costs to consumers and subsidies.

Man shot after assault hijack attempt at San Jose airport
A gunman Fred Salomon of San Jose killed by a police sharpshooter after attempting to hijack an empty Continental Airlines 727 with four hostages. Fifteen year old Sandra Dison of Alameda won the Miss California Teen crown amid confusion over runner up counts. Organizer Mrs Rose Misuraca corrected the list naming Patricia Ann Misuraca as winner and listed Ilelen Collins Linda Salcedo Annette Cooper and Mary McDermott as runners up. A withered ivy display on the Dunsmuir House porch is part of a Twenty first Century Fox plan to age the Oakland site for the film The Family Plot. Decorators rented the plants from Decorative Plant Rentals in Hayward and added yellow wallpaper stains and roof wear. Stars rumored include Bette Davis and Oliver Reed.
