President Carter campaigned in New Jersey stumping for Governor Brendan Byrne amid tax revolt protests at Newark and a larger turnout in Trenton. He defended Byrne and Lance, urged Lance to explain allegations, and noted Byrd's call for Lance resignation while praising Byrne's tax choices and education funding.
Hayward has hired two women as firefighter trainees under CETA to join regular shifts after training, with dormitory sharing and eventual full eligibility. San Leandro plans to recruit firefighters, funding six CETA positions and contributing local funds. City officials emphasize affirmative action, job related testing, and revised agility tests to remove barriers for women and minorities. Newark also plans to hire, with outreach to women’s groups to boost applications.

Livermore firefighters responded to a gas leak at 3754 Oregon Way and uncovered a suspected methamphetamine lab. A 30 year old woman, Sherry Prince, was arrested on suspicion of possessing meth for sale. Seven people, including six firefighters, were treated for caustic burns and inhalation injuries and later released. Police and federal agents investigated the scene where methylamine and other chemicals were found in unmarked containers.
A Navy A-3 tanker crashed into San Francisco Bay just after takeoff from Alameda Naval Air Station. Pilot Lt Cmdr John Bat, 32, of Concord, and Aviation Structural Mechanic 2nd Class Jenner Sullivan of Pittsburgh died. Sullivan recovered. Bat missing. Accident occurred after Ball aborted takeoff. divers located the wreckage and planned recovery today.
