Fremont Hub Fall Festival of the Arts Opens Today

Festivities run today and tomorrow at the Fremont Hub with art demonstrations by local creators and exhibits at Sun Gallery in Hayward through Oct. 10. Also featured: library crafts, live shows at Center Theater, and a nature walk at Coyote Hills. Weather advisory predicts showers with 70s highs and 50s to 60s lows.

Storm Kathleen Ravages Southwest Desert Towns

Storm Kathleen drenched the Southwest from Mexico border regions through California and Arizona causing floods and outages. A 3 foot wall of water hit a small town with vehicles swept away and two deaths reported. Cities including El Centro Yuma and Seeley faced downed power lines, road closures, and rescues while a flash flood watch warned of more rain. Interstate 8 and Highway 95 closures extended 150 miles, with bridges washed out near Ocotillo and Warker. Helicopters aided rescues as neighborhoods flooded and homes flooded waters rose to several feet.

Hijackers Release 31 From TWA Flight 355 In Gander

Six men claiming to belong to a Croatian group hijacked a TWA 727 from New York to Chicago with 92 aboard. They diverted to Gander Newfoundland where 31 hostages were released. RCMP said talks continue with hijackers and transportation officials.

Bomb explodes at Bronx range tied to hijack crew

A pressure cooker bomb linked to the six hijackers of a TWA jet with 92 aboard exploded in the Bronx police firing range bomb pit early today. One bomb squad officer was killed and three others injured as officers checked the device after it failed to detonate. The blast occurred around 12 45 a m. The injuries and exact identities were not immediately clear.

Vincents Get Probation in Marijuana Case

Fremont officials report Irene Vincent and her husband were placed in a diversion program after admitting to growing marijuana in their backyard. The judge released them without bond pending a probation department recommendation, with a one year period to clear their records if no further offenses occur.

City may hire litter cop if cleanup plan approved

Hayward awaits city council action on a comprehensive cleanup proposal from the Environmental Quality Commission led by Jim Bunker. A permanent litter officer may be funded by franchise fees from Oakland Scavenger Co, with buy in from volunteers and plans for annual free garbage pickup, recycling centers, and community cleanup programs to support the centennial and Bicentennial celebrations.

New postal funds delay rate hikes in US Senate action

The House approved a $1 billion subsidy for the US Postal Service and barred rate hikes or service cuts until March 1977. The Senate backed the measure 276 to 3 and sent it to President Ford, described as a stopgap while a commission studies a permanent solution. The bill would delay rate changes and post office closures until a final decision by the new Congress.
