Statewide forecast shows cloudy today with possible showers inland this afternoon and tonight. Temperatures vary by region from the mid 60s in San Francisco to mid 70s in several valleys, with clearing by Thursday and cooler coastal winds.

Los Angeles AP State Assembly Leader Jesse M. Unruh predicted on Tuesday that President Kennedy will carry California relatively easily in next year’s election campaign. He warned Republicans must find a stronger issue than Unruh and addressed a Democratic Associates meeting. He said tax increases for education appear inevitable but that California should be able to fund higher education without undermining local property taxes. He defended Gordon Winton, criticized the Citizens Committee for Honest Government, and urged party unity to tackle education, conservation and civil rights with targeted grants.
Williams campaign funds show Knowland not a candidate for Senate in 1964. He said he could carry California but would not re-enter primary politics due to busi ness and personal commitments. A Citizens Committee poll and other speculation followed, with talk of possible GOP candidates from Southern California and Northern contenders.

A Soviet made automobile, a gift from Premier Nikita Khrushchev, has been presented to Fidel Castro, Havana's radio reports. The broadcast says the gift honors Castro's praised progress in the Soviet auto industry and acknowledges Cuban achievements in car production.
FBI arrests three men in a bank robbery in Idaho that netted 355000 after hostages were held and a fire diverted attention. Suspects, including Joseph Lincoln Gordon Jr. and Ronald Gordon, were captured in California. Wives Cheryl Lynn Halverson and Shirley Gordon also charged in stolen money case. The trio allegedly held bank manager Frank Grocke and his family during a terror filled night. Shotgun and two rifles seized. bulk of funds recovered. Gordon arraigned in California with bonds set. Authorities said the Sept. 6 heist involved vehicle diversion and residential entry to Grocke home prior to the bank raid.
T Jack Foster and his sons invest about 5 million to develop 2009 mud flats on Brewer Island into a marina type community. Ground breaking for the first Foster City home on San Mateo Bay adjacent land is planned with 11 000 homes and 35 000 residents. Major developers Kay Homes Eichler Homes and Die Elliott join in the 10 year project with bonds to fund streets sewers and water. First model home set for late October in San Mateo County.
