In Attica New York convicts seized four cellblocks holding dozens of guards and four civilian workers as fear gas drove back police. Officials report 1,280 inmates remained out of control while demands ranged from religious and political freedoms to higher prison wages and improved rehabilitation practices.
President Nixon met with George Meany and AFL-CIO leaders to hear views on the post-freeze economy. Meany said the position was clear and labor would cooperate if the next program is fair. Leonard Woodcock urged a voluntary tripartite plan replacing the wage-price freeze, while noting no-strike pledges are not feasible now.
A two year ABAG sponsored report concludes organized crime is present in the Bay Area and that local police lack central intelligence to fight it, with agencies split on the issue. San Leandro Chief Rogers and Hayward Chief Marchand were wary of comment, noting they have not seen the study. The report links national patterns to prostitution, burglary, stolen property, narcotics and gambling, but cites few such cases in San Leandro.
In California voters weigh Richard Nixon’s potential running mate, debating whether to keep Spiro Agnew, pair with conservative Ronald Reagan, or seek a more moderate choice like Nelson Rockefeller or John Connally. The poll notes Agnew’s appeal in California may be a drag to Nixon’s ticket.

The case ties to civil rights law violations and federal bomb statutes while busing in Pontiac proceeds amid tensions and scattered violence after schools close.
Saigon reports say 1500 to 2000 U.S. troops are directly aiding a South Vietnamese drive south of the DMZ near Laos. Maj. Richard Gardner notes personnel provide air and artillery support. U.S. fighter-bombers also hit two antiaircraft sites in North Vietnam while escorting an unarmed reconnaissance plane.
Ohlone College in Fremont rehired President Stephen Ki Epler after a marathon two hour session over his contract. Trustees Joseph McCard and Walter J. Thompson led charges of weak leadership as the board extended Epler’s contract from 197? to 1975 with no salary change. The decision came after a midnight personnel meeting questioning his administration and urging innovation over tradition.
Hayward state highway crews clear land for Route 92 the Jackson Freeway through Hayward. Ground is being removed for the Mt Eden area the former four corners and the Eden Furniture Store will vanish as construction proceeds with a projected one million dollars in construction costs. The project displaces longstanding Mt Eden landmarks and reshapes the village’s historic grid.
