SAN FRANCISCO The 3500 residents of Yreka were alerted to prepare for evacuation as a major forest fire in the Klamath National Forest west of the town burned within six miles at one point. The fire could be seen from Yreka with ashes and heavy smoke. The National Guard and local volunteers watched as up to midnight the blaze had blackened between 20,000 and 30,000 acres.
