Fremonts Boundaries Protested By Leona Ward

Alameda County supervisors heard proposals to shrink a proposed 50 square mile Fremont into Washington township, excluding Union City and Newark areas. The three hour hearing adjourned to September 27 to await Newark’s incorporation decision and potential Fremont boundary changes. Fremont attorney LeRoy Broun argued the plan would create a balanced, self governed community with roads and taxes adequate for growth, including Centerville, Niles, Irvington, Mission San Jose, and Warm Springs.

Assault case dropped in San Leandro incident

San Leandro police released two men identified as David Aguilar, 18, and William Reyes, 24, after a San Leandro assault and rape allegation by an Oakland housewife did not proceed when the victim refused to sign a complaint. The four-hour incident occurred on South Jackson Street and Bushlar Jane area.

Huge Forest Fire Nears Cinders Falling On Town

SAN FRANCISCO The 3500 residents of Yreka were alerted to prepare for evacuation as a major forest fire in the Klamath National Forest west of the town burned within six miles at one point. The fire could be seen from Yreka with ashes and heavy smoke. The National Guard and local volunteers watched as up to midnight the blaze had blackened between 20,000 and 30,000 acres. Fire lines, backfires, and bulldozers were planned near Hawkinsville, while more than 22 fires burned in the forest. Estimated losses reach 37.5 million in timber. Weather gusts and a backfire effort dominated the day as two major fires were battled near Sequoia and the General Grant grove amid the redwoods. Authorities warned the danger persisted with lines under development.

Holt Detained by Red Guard Near Moscow

Rep Joe Holt of California says he was detained for nearly an hour by a Russian soldier outside Moscow after stopping to photograph a church and school. He reported the incident to U S Ambassador Bohlen, who protested to the Kremlin. Holt described being grabbed after he began to take pictures.

Washington Manor bond defeat urged by taxpayers group

Alameda County Taxpayers association released a report urging rejection of a $360000 bond issue for the Washington Manor Community Services district. It claims interest would total about 420000 over 40 years, that annexation to San Leandro could cut home costs, and questions the district’s budgeting and payments under the proposal.

Cherryland Capwell Fight To Be Dropped

Capwell Emporium plans to drop its bid to exclude the Foothill Boulevard site opposite Hayward High from the Cherryland Water District and abandon court action challenging the district's formation. Attorney J Kenneth Birchfield told district directors a review of assessed valuations shows water costs not as high as first thought and the company does not wish to be in two separate tax districts. The move avoids costly proceedings and aims to ease community burden.
