The San Francisco Labor Council urged members to observe the November 15 Vietnam War Moratorium and discuss the war with family and colleagues. An amendment for outright support of the moratorium was defeated.
San Francisco officials approved 10 million for stadium expansion. An 8 million bond will pay remaining 442 million debt, add artificial turf and 7,000 moveable seats. A 5 million issue will add a second deck, escalators and elevators, enabling NFL games for the Giants and 49ers.
In San Francisco AP reports grand jurors charged Nathan Ellis 19 and an unidentified companion with rape robbery and kidnaping. The men allegedly assaulted three young women in the city with one victim fleeing after screaming. Ellis held on a prior rape conviction and was arrested after police recovered a stolen item.
Pierre Hondeville of Aresle, France, visited San Francisco Interum iunal Airport with his trip marking his first trip outside France since 1908. His two sisters in the United States Genevieve Schmidt, 75, of Pleasant Hill and Anna Monis, 67, of Sacramento, recognized him instantly after decades apart.
AP reports in Concord a Contra Costa County Superior Court jury denied Mrs. Bobbie Sue Egbert a 400000 claim against Parke Davis Pharmaceutical Co. alleging the antibiotic streptomycin caused deafness in her daughter, born with infection and treated a week after birth. The case centered on warning labels and overdose concerns.
Oakland Economic Development Council asks the Internal Revenue Service to probe Mayor John Reading over withholding about 246000 dollars in federal funds for anti poverty work. Percy Moore, executive director, says 120000 from the Office of Economic Opportunity and 120000 from Ford Foundation funds are blocked pending an audit of the Department of Human Resources books and the transition to the OEDC.
Visiting cosmonauts Georgy Beregovoy and Konstantin Feoktistov faced a small protest at a San Francisco restaurant and city reception. Police shielded them while escorts Eugene Cernan and L. Gordon Cooper Jr. accompanied the group. They toured the city by cable car and attended a Cow Palace horse show after a formal welcome at City Hall.
Washington UPI report says the Senate Finance Committee considers stripping foundations of control over corporations, setting a 40 year life span for new foundations, a 5 percent payout, annual 0.2 percent tax, and disbanding existing foundations by 2009. Proposals ban self dealing and political influence to fund charity. Senator Albert Gore backs a 40 year limit and leads push for disbanding after the period.

San Francisco Naval Shipyard commander Adm. Frankenberger said payroll cuts at Hunters Point and Mare Island will be below the federal authorizations of 1252 and 840. He noted a recent landing ship dock assignment would reduce losses, and a new Federal Retirement Act would further lower layoff figures with no immediate 60 day notices.
Hollywood police traced a homemade bomb placed in the trunk of a used car after it was repossessed Monday. Mike Wilson found a pint bottle with buckshot, green plastic explosive, sand, and a blasting cap, and a policeman dismantled it. The former owner was not identified.
Tatiana Tarasoff, 20, UC Berkeley junior known for language studies, was stabbed repeatedly on her porch by Naval engineer Poddar, who surrendered to police. Neighbors witnessed the attack. Poddar was wounded by an assault knife during the incident and treated at Highland Hospital. The Tarasoff family, refugees from Shanghai, noted Tatiana planned to teach in South America.
SAN FRANCISCO UP I reports a Sausalito group Grand Central Station paid 8500 to produce a pie throwing segment for the opening night of the San Francisco Film Festival. Eight camera crews, four sound tracks, costumes and a pie wagon were used. Thirteen were arrested for disturbing the peace and appeared before Municipal Judge James J Welsh, case postponed a week at the DA's request.
