Saved by Surgery 2nd Birthday For Diaphragm Child
Donnie Lenhart, born with no diaphragm, underwent a pioneering operation using knitted dacron aortic graft material to serve as a diaphragm. Surgeon Dr. J Ordie Shaffer of Hayward led the rare procedure on his second birthday, after early life in 1961 marked by a collapsed left lung and abdominal organs encroaching the chest. Dr. Shaffer later discussed the case in Rome with Dr. Michael DeBakey, finding no prior record of such a diaphragm graft. Donnie is reported to be progressing normally.
