Harrington Named New Commissioner of Internal Revenue

Russell Chase Harrington an accountant from Providence Rhode Island and treasurer of the U S Chamber of Commerce is to be the new commissioner of Internal Revenue Treasury Secretary George M Humphrey announced. He will take over about December 1 after T Coleman Andrews departs October 31 to lead an insurance firm in Richmond Virginia Harrington 35 will sever all business ties to accept the post Deputy Commissioner O Gordon Delk will head the service in the interim Harrington has been with Ernst and Ernst since 1920 a partner since 1940 and is past president of the Providence Chamber of Commerce He has served as director of the U S Chamber and treasurer of the National Businessmen's Organization.

Man Killed On the Day Of Wedding

State Boom In Business In California

Sacramento reports a 1 percent business boom boosting state revenues by more than 30 million dollars. For July to September the Finance Department estimated 183.4 million dollars in revenue but actual receipts rose to 314.8 million dollars. Sales tax receipts totalled 138.2 million, the highest quarterly figure in the tax history.

Police Officer Falls While Photographing Hayward Cliff Scene

Hayward police officer Rutilia R. Zuniga, 31, assigned to shoot photos of a 50 foot cliff fall, slipped from the cliff top yesterday and tumbled 65 feet to a path below. He suffered head, hand, and leg cuts and abrasions and was treated at Levine Hospital. Zuniga reported his camera also fell, but he is not expected to return to duties soon.

Peiping demanded Portugal end its occupation of the Macao colony and warned of possible action to reclaim the enclave. Morrisey Knight Aide Dies at 49 in California

Nicholas I. Morrisey, 49, director of the Department of Vocational Standards and a member of Gov. Goodwin J. Knight's cabinet, died at Stanford Hospital of coronary occlusion after a heart attack in Sacramento. A San Francisco native, he served as a state official since 1932, appointed to his current post on October 27, 1953, and is survived by his wife and two children. Sacramento Governor Knight called the death shocking and grave, praising Morrisey as a statewide expert in administration of licensing and regulatory laws.

Model Industry Tract In San Lorenzo Moves Planned

San LorenzoVillage builders and the David D Bohannon organization moved to balance the area's tax base by developing a 61 acre model industrial tract west of the Southern Pacific tracks near Beckman road. The Oro Loma Sanitary District approved selling land at $2000 per acre, same price as paid, with Bohannon promising to start construction and attract industrial users within 18 months. The district owns 180 acres for sale to select industries as part of San Lorenzo Village’s planned community begun in 1844.

Air Force debunks flying saucers with new craft claims

The Air Force released a report saying flying saucers are bunk and outlined two new aircraft projects.
