A neglected cigarette started a fire at Grover F. Daniels Jr. at 8414 Vine Street Castro Valley causing about 500 dollars in damages. Firefighters arrived at 3 36 am Sunday to find the living room in flames and smoke. A separate blaze damaged an awning at 8381 Castro Valley Boulevard around 5 37 pm with undetermined cause. Several small fires caused by high winds and defective incinerators were reported by Hayward Castro Valley and Ashland fire departments Sunday.

Welder Injured by Gas Line Explosion in Irvington
Raymond E. Jetter, 31, of Concord, was severely burned when an explosion rocked a 20 inch gas pipeline he was welding inside. He was rushed to Fairmont hospital in serious condition and then moved to another facility. Jetter sustained second and third degree burns to the face, chest, abdomen, back and arms. Weekend California crashes claim lives and injure many
A series of accidents across Northern California over the weekend left at least one child dead and multiple youths injured. An out of control sedan plowed down a San Francisco street killing an 8 year old boy, while a car carrying five youths crashed on a Marin county road, sending four to serious condition. A Pleasanton driver escaped injury after his 1948 sedan was dragged by a Southern Pacific train on the Pleasanton Livermore road. Folsom inmate escapes from honor farm
Folsom California 36 year old William Sukovitzen escaped from the prison honor farm last night while serving 15 years to life for robberies in Sacramento Nevada and San Francisco counties. Warden Robert Heinze reported the inmate was missing at 9 pm check and remains at large.
