Quiet withdrawal begins as U S pulls jets from Thailand
Allied sources say the 355th Tactical Fighter Wing at Takhli, north of Bangkok, is returning about 60 of 80 F105 Thunderchief jets to the United States as the unit is inactivated. Takhli will be handed to the Thai Air Force while the U S uses bases at Ubon, Udorn, Nakhon Ratchasima, Korat and U Tapao. The withdrawal accompanies a broader U S pullback in Indochina, shrinking personnel from 418,000 to 42,000. The 335th TFW arrived in 1965, with recent missions focused on Laos. B52s now operate from Thailand following relocations from Guam and Okinawa.
