Two Grocers Robbed By Gunman In Hayward
Hayward police hunted a gunman who held up two grocers at the Supermarket on 7180 Tennyson road around 12:45 a.m. He took 45 from Yee 250 from Wong and 1422 in checks. The suspects described as six feet tall 155 pounds wore a dark short jacket and a 45 caliber pistol. A green 1950 Buick was seen leaving the area. Separately, rescuers recovered the bodies of two Palo Alto men from a light plane crash near the Dumbarton bridge after it went into mudflats.

Phone Workers Return To Jobs After Wage Hike
About 22,000 telephone workers across Northern California ended a two week strike as a settlement was reached with Pacific Telephone and Telegraph. The wage scale rose by 2 to 4.50 weekly, with Hayward area workers gaining a wage differential adjustment. Operators and business office staff in Hayward moved to the higher AAA bracket, while San Leandro and western areas are in the top pay tier. CWA official Wesley Rochford confirmed the upgrades and that most upgrades were on the bargaining table when the strike began. Company manager Douglas Smith said the upgrading item was discussed but not promised. All workers were back in South and Alameda counties, with full restoration expected by Friday barring only emergency jobs.
