Washington reports the Consumer Price Index rose 0.3 percent in September, marking the smallest gain of 1977 and signaling a slower inflation pace. Food costs eased with declines in pork, fruits, eggs, coffee, dairy, oils, while fresh vegetables rose. Real weekly earnings fell 0.4 percent from August.
New Haven public schools reach a tentative two year contract with the district. The agreement includes a 5.4 percent salary increase this year, enhanced health benefits, binding arbitration, and specified class sizes. Ratification meeting likely late next week for teachers and district representatives.
In its first full year, Hayward's federally funded traffic unit reduced injuries and fatal crashes city wide by 6 percent and nearly halved accidents at the 12 most perilous intersections. The program, started Oct 5 1976 with $191,391 in federal funds, reports a 62 percent rise in citations for accident causing violations, and a 20 percent jump in drunken driving arrests.
Atlanta area report details Thomas Michael Hannan a 29 year old man who hijacked a Frontier Airlines jet at Hartsfield International airport and held 15 people hostage. After 13 hours, he shot himself as negotiations failed and passengers were released. He had demanded 2 million and was urged to surrender by his attorney and friends.
A chartered Convair 240 carrying the Lynyrd Skynyrd group crashed in a Mississippi piney area near Gilllsburg. Lead singer Rene Van Zant and five others died. 20 aboard were injured, with several in critical condition. Survivors included Allen Collins, Gary Rossington, Artimus Pyle, Leon Wilkeson, and Billy Powell. The pilot and co pilot perished. The craft ran low on fuel and went down about 200 yards from an open field two miles northeast of Gilllsburg. Rescue crews retrieved injured amid knee deep water, transporting most to Southwest Medical Center in McComb and later to Jackson. The flight was en route from Greenville to Baton Rouge for a Friday concert.
