West German Chancellor Willy Brandt wins the 1971 Nobel Peace Prize in Oslo. The award honors his work to ease East West tensions and improve West Berlin relations as East bloc treaties move toward ratification. The prize includes 308000 kronor from Nobel funds.
Union City voters rejected a federal low income housing program by 116 to 352 amid 25 percent turnout. The plan would have created up to 310 housing units financed by the federal government and offered to low income renters via rent supplements. Casa Verde residents backed a near total no vote, while City Manager William Zand commented that the results could influence views of Turnkey across the area.
Kenneth Curly Camo, 31, a former Manson follower, was captured in West Hollywood seven tours after escaping the Hall of Justice.
