Liberal Moses town of atheists and spiritualists fades from history
Liberal Missouri founded in 1881 as an atheist center by George H Walser and followers seeking a church free town. The movement drew freethinkers and mediums, built Universal Mental Liberty Hall and Spiritualist venues, sparked clashes with Christian residents, and by 1900 the venture collapsed leaving Liberal with five churches and about 612 residents.
