U. S. Envoy to Ireland Matthews Dies at 65

Omaha report states P. J. Matthews, former U. S. Ambassador to Ireland and ex Navy Secretary, died suddenly of a heart attack at 9 18 AM CST while on vacation. The wealthy Omaha attorney and Roman Catholic lay leader had planned to return to Dublin when the new administration takes over. He served in government and Democratic circles, led Knights of Columbus, and had been an official in WW II relief efforts. His death leaves five children with his wife Marguerite at his side.

Youths Held for Russell City Theft

Three juveniles, two AWOL from the Navy, are in Alameda County Juvenile Detention for investigation after a shed at Russell City junk yard was broken into. Missing items include a pistol, stamps, gold pieces, a silver tank, a lever and jewels. Deputies report part of the loot located and suspect activity traced to pawn shops.
