A dawn confrontation outside a city draft center drew 400 plus officers and 000 were opposed to the war. Fourteen arrests occurred as pickets clashed with police who used clubs and tear gas. Injuries included an officer with an ankle injury and several demonstrators struck amid gas, litter, and overturned racks.
National Forest to the northwest fights a Timber Canyon blaze along an eight mile front with 300 men deployed from other fires. Officials warn winds could worsen the fire threatening structures in Ventura County if they shift, though none reported damaged yet.
Firefighters battled a forest blaze two miles east of Pescadero on the San Mateo County coast. Assistant Ranger Tom Meade said crews hoped to have it under complete control later today as seven air tankers from Hollister Paso Robles Columbia and Fresno dumped over 100 gallons of flame smothering gelled water on the fire.
Gov Reagan and acting governor Finch praise Oakland Police Department Alameda County Sheriff and California Highway Patrol for meeting and stopping a threat to illegally disrupt and close the induction center as Reagan travels in the Virgin Islands.

The bill provides a 4.3 percent raise retroactive to October 1 with further increases over two years. A 4.5 percent increase equates to a 5.6 percent basic pay rise costing about 600 million dollars. The panel links military pay to civilian raise language to ensure automatic adjustment if federal action stalls.
A burglar stole nearly $1,500 worth of walkie talkie and battery equipment from a trailer at American Pipe Co. 29901 Industrial Parkway. The loss was reported to Hayward police yesterday.
Thousands joined nationwide antiwar protests with hundreds burning draft cards and 30 cities reporting demonstrations. In Boston 67 youths burned cards at Arlington Street Church while 220 later surrendered cards to clergymen, totaling about 3 500 demonstrators. Protests occurred at embassies, universities, and government buildings from New York to London and across New England.
Los Angeles activists staged a three hour demonstration at the armed forces induction station on Broadway. Authorities arrested 19 people including fifteen men three women and a juvenile for blocking a doorway as officers boarded a police bus.
SEOUL UP President Chung Hee Park remains in satisfactory condition after a minor surgery at Seoul National University Hospital. Medical bulletin from the hospital confirms the progress and notes the operation completed successfully with no complications reported.
Mrs. McCall, mother of Cenifred McCall, mourns the second son lost to a Navy accident. The Navy investigates with few details available. Cenifred, a Tennyson High School graduate from Hayward, served in the Navy and later studied at California State College Hayward before working in missile research at Lockheed Sunnyvale. He requested reactivation before his death. his father C. G. McCall lives in Oakland. Mrs. Gaudinier and her parents reside on Ruus Road.
