Officials undecided on hit run case in Buckman injury
Santa Clara County officials have not decided on charges against William L Barnhill of Irvington after he turned himself in regarding the Monday hit and run that left seven year old Joseph Buckman Jr. in critical condition. District Attorney Nap Menard conferred with Barnhill and his attorney Gerald S Chargin, who is unfamiliar with the facts, and will discuss with the San Jose attorney. Barnhill, a married father of two, said he hit an object he thought was a dog and left the scene after the clipping.

UN Week Opens With World Peace Theme In Alameda County

Two Men Struck by Auto in San Leandro
A car struck two men crossing Williams street at Orchard avenue in San Leandro Saturday night. Elizo Monte 61 of 2009 Alvarado street suffered a badly broken leg. Joseph Olivera 56 of 748 Castro street was released after treatment. Police said pedestrians were in the roadway. the driver from San Francisco was cited for pedestrian right of way and speeding. A separate crash near Mt Eden involved Patrick E. Henry 28 of San Francisco whose car rolled over after losing control. he was treated for abrasions and released.

Sailor Injured In Oakland Crash Injures Three
An auto driven by Walter A. Tackett, 22, a San Leandro sailor stationed in San Diego, jumped the curb at East 4th street and 34th avenue in Oakland. Three pedestrians were injured. Clara Busch, 51, and Hermion Snyder, 49, were hospitalized with back, chest, and facial injuries. Tackett was cited for speeding and lack of visible vehicle registration.

Murder Charge Is Filed Against Hayward Man
Berwin M Mann a 27 year old Hayward steelworker was formally charged with murder for the death of his 22 month old stepson Steven J Hurtado. He will be arraigned in Hayward Municipal Court Friday after a continuation to consult counsel. Authorities say Mann admitted punching the infant up to 15 times and pinching him before the child fell from a chair and died at Eden hospital. The case follows the child’s funeral as Mann’s wife describes a troubling relationship and mentions her plans to live with her mother as authorities review prior probation and a 1954 Oakland robbery conviction.
