Judge extends back to work order in West Coast dock clash

U S District Judge William Sweigert extended a temporary back to work order on 13 000 striking West Coast longshoremen and planned to sign a preliminary injunction. The cooling off period under Taft Hartley was requested by President Nixon as the 100 day strike nears its end while losses mount across coastal unions and rail workers. A contempt show cause hearing was set for next Thursday for ILWU locals in Los Angeles Oakland and Long Beach.

Ventura County Executive Named Alameda County Administrator

Alameda County supervisors selected Leren W. Enoch as the new county administrator, replacing Earl R. Strathman who retires March 1. Enoch will earn less than Strathman’s 42,000 a year after holding a 28.6 million annual Ventura County post for six years. He is married with three children and previously worked in Los Angeles County and with the Southern California Association of Governments. Enoch, living in Oxnard, was among five candidates and interviewed twice in Alameda County. Strathman, 58, retires to Grass Valley after a long tenure and travels planned in the coming months.

State agency proposed to save California coast

Sacramento reports a $1 billion plan by California Parks and Recreation to form a state coastal agency, regulate development, and acquire hundreds of thousands of acres along 238 miles of shoreline. The proposal includes a moratorium on shoreline development and funding via bonds, gas taxes, tolls, federal funds, and general revenues.

Schools mull closing Gansberger Bidwell next year

Supt Ray Arveson disclosed that HAYWARD Hidwell and Gansberger elementary schools face possible closures next year along with at least two others. Meetings with Gansberger Argonaut PTA and a separate Oct 26 session will gauge parent reaction as enrollment declines prompt district cuts.
