Weather Corner notes continued fair conditions with moderate winds. Afternoon winds will be west to northwest at 8 to 15 knots offshore, easing later. No heavy rain expected. temperatures mild through the period.

Yesterday's high reached 99 in Fresno and 82 in Red Bluff while Bakersfield posted 60 and Oakland 69. San Francisco recorded 69 while Los Angeles stood at 60 and San Diego at 9. Daily lows ranged from 36 in Oakland to 16 in Thermal with many other cities showing mid 40s to mid 60s.
CHICAGO AP The United Auto Workers and International Harvester Co reached a tentative year long agreement shortly before a scheduled strike by 32 000 workers at plants in Emeryville Stockton and other cities The pact raises wages by 21 percent or 1 cent an hour whichever is greater and expands benefits including cost of living allowances hospitalization and medical coverage unemployment and pension provisions Affected plants include Emeryville and Stockton California with balloting by locals expected to finish by Sunday and council action today
In Wallingford Connecticut Robert R Nielson 28 of Bridgeport attempted to patch things with farmer Nancee Sun by night. Police said he sought vengeance on a source of trouble smashing a jewelry store window with a large garbage can then was arrested moments later.
