UN and communist liaison teams met for three hours in Panmunjom and failed to narrow disputes over the Kaesong neutral zone and UN responsibility for partisan attacks. Both sides prepared to resume talks, but no compromise was offered in the makeshift tent.
UN forces led by five tank units captured ten hills and struck a Chinese defense line with up to 17 000 troops along a 30 mile front south of Kumsong. Chinese reserves poured into the area as Allied helicopters delivered ammo and reported rocket fire from Katusha systems. In one four mile sector, Chinese pulled back from stockpiles to solidify positions, with 5 000 Red casualties reported over three days.
Refugees fleeing Pyongyang and nearby towns said six violent disturbances occurred in Pyongyang Chinnampo Taepyong Chinji-Don. Police quelled the riots and arrested ringleaders who were openly hostile to police. refugees expect executions. Desertions at the front were rising as the unrest emerged.
President Truman made a new peace bid to the Soviet Union urging sincere efforts to see the world from the scourge of atomic warfare. French voters backed Eisenhower aligned forces as Premier Rene Pleven’s right center government gained seats while the Communist party suffered its worst defeats since liberation. Across 514 cantons over two Sundays 3,022 legislators were chosen, with Independents, Radical Socialists, and DeGaullists winning gains and Communists dropping to 115 seats.
Workers at the California and Hawaiian Sugar refinery plant walkout ended today after warehouse men accepted a package increasing wages by about 2 dollars per week, closing the sugar refinery during the dispute.
Joseph Perez, 22, of Oakland, was captured by Oakland and county detectives after beating Deputy Cal Nutting with his own handcuffs during an attempted break-in. Perez fled from Nutting and Deputy Ben Putnam, later captured in downtown Oakland. He faces charges of assault with a deadly weapon and felony escape. investigations into seduction and bigamy are ongoing.

Washington reports William M. Boyle Jr who resigned as chairman of the Democratic National Committee is in Georgetown University Hospital for a checkup and observation aides say the health issue prompted his resignation. Boyle entered the hospital late yesterday according to his office.
At Winston-Salem the speaker commented on Bowles resignation without quoting. He said he was sorry to see him go and still thinks highly of him. He did not ask for Bowles to resign nor want him to quit, noting the resignation surprised him. Trunga offered no comment on the new chairmen selections.
Ronald Kesler, 26 months, of 534 B Street, was injured yesterday afternoon when he ran into a car in front of his home. Driver Wilbert D. Hogg, 22, said he had nearly stopped as the child darted onto the roadway. The infant received treatment at Fairmont Hospital.
Oscar W. Tennison, 40, is jailed after sheriff deputies answered a disturbance call by Mrs. Zella Tennison. She said he dumped a bucket of water on her as they argued in the living room and then moved to drier areas while he continued soaking her. He admitted the acts and said they would continue unless jailed. He faces disturbing the peace charges.
